Laptops in 2026: How to Buy One Without Spending a Fortune

Today’s laptops are devices capable of offering you all the power of a desktop PC, with the convenience of a high level of portability. This combination of features makes them ideal both for work and for leisure.

The recent increase in hardware prices is leading to greater awareness and attention during the purchasing phase. In 2026, in fact, few people can afford to simply choose the “best” model on the market. In order to keep spending within an acceptable budget, you basically need to know which components to focus on carefully and where it is possible to make cuts instead.

By balancing priorities and having a clear understanding of the fundamental task of certain hardware parts, it is possible to select a product that fully satisfies the buyer’s needs. In this article, we will examine and evaluate what the preferred characteristics should be, keeping in mind the potential uses of the laptop.

Laptops in 2026: what to give up to reduce prices?

As mentioned, a lot when choosing a laptop depends on the intended use and under what mobility conditions.

Having clear usage scenarios allows you to direct your attention (and budget) to specific features. Let’s analyze the components in more detail and in what contexts they are more or less useful.

CPU and RAM, the essentials

Processor and RAM remain, unfortunately, an absolute priority, despite the now very high prices.

The CPU (processor) executes the instructions and calculations necessary to run software, operating systems, and applications. RAM, on the other hand, temporarily stores data for the programs in use, allowing for quick access.

A powerful processor makes the computer faster at processing, while an adequate amount of RAM allows you to use multiple applications simultaneously without slowdowns.

Both hardware parts are crucial for performance, regardless of how you intend to use the computer. Together, the CPU and RAM establish a large part of the laptop’s performance, speed, and fluidity.

Generally, as a starting point, we can recommend a quad-core with 8-thread processor, with a recent architecture and a base frequency of around 2 GHz or higher. As for RAM, even basic usage now requires at least 8 GB.

A configuration of this type offers basic performance, which is enough to browse the web, watch streaming content, read emails, and perform light tasks.

Battery, for those who prefer mobility

From the point of view of the battery, there are two distinct philosophies.

There are those who need a portable computer, for example to be able to work on a train, and must therefore consider autonomy one of the absolute priorities. In this case, there are several laptops that make this feature their strong point: on OutOfBit some models are listed that offer the best in this regard.

Otherwise, that is, if the intention is to use the notebook as a backup for a desktop PC or in any case to transport it rarely, it is possible not to focus on super batteries (choosing a less performing model) to focus on other features.

Screen dimensions: large or small display?

Another factor for a potentially advantageous compromise is the screen. Normally, a larger display is preferable: but is this always the case?

This component, with its dimensions, affects the bulk and weight of the laptop. This means that, for a computer that is transported frequently, a large screen is consequently a greater inconvenience for the owner.

Let’s get more specific, evaluating (in addition to the size in inches) what the considerations to make on a laptop display are:

  • Resolution: the standard is Full HD (1920×1080), now the baseline for any screen. If you want more sharpness, you can go up to 2K/3K;
  • Panel type: IPS is a good balance, although OLED is for superior contrast and colors (even if the cost may be higher);
  • Brightness: at least 300 nits, preferably 400 nits or more for those who intend to use the computer outdoors or in bright environments.
  • Refresh rate: 60 Hz for basic use or 90–120 Hz for gaming laptops;
  • Color coverage: high sRGB for general use or DCI-P3 for creative work.
  • Protection technologies: flicker reduction and blue light filter, very useful for intense computer use.

Not only that: it should be considered that it is possible to connect a laptop to an external display which, via HDMI, significantly expands the space available to the user.

Storage space, to avoid additional external media

Although any storage space problems can be easily solved through external hard drives, it is good to evaluate this aspect too before an otherwise rash purchase.

Nowadays, SSD drives are a must, despite them also being subject to a constant increase in prices. This technology, in fact, drastically reduces the loading times of the operating system as well as of the programs. To avoid problems in this regard, the advice is to opt for at least 512 GB of memory: going down to 256 GB is only possible for a computer for essential use, given that Windows (but also the most common Linux distros) take up several GBs of space.

Even in this case, much depends on the use made of the computer: those who store a large amount of bulky files, such as videos or software, see data storage space as a priority. Those who use the laptop to browse online and download emails can also give up a few GBs without particular problems.

Connectivity should not be underestimated

Modern laptops generally offer adequate connectivity. Despite this, especially when choosing a model from a little-known manufacturer, it is a good habit and rule to do some checks.

Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax connectivity is now the baseline, even if a newer notebook can offer you Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. As for Bluetooth, 5.0 is the minimum standard for any computer.

Going further, several ports are also essential, such as USB-A and USB-C, preferably with support for charging and fast data transfer. An HDMI port is useful for connecting external monitors or televisions. For those with special needs, it is possible to check for the presence of other ports such as one for reading SD cards, Ethernet, and an audio jack.
